Broking Assistant/Associate - US Institutional Equity Sales Our client, an employee-owned, international capital markets group is looking for a US Institutional Equity Desk Sales Assistant. Working with a team of no more than 2 brokers, the individual must have a distinctive personality. They must have excellent communication skills (both face-to-face and telephone based), good at nurturing and driving client relationships and fundamentally representing the Sales Director, to which the candidate will directly report to, in all he does.
Regular travel will be mandatory and likewise arranging ‘road shows’ will also be a requirement, albeit on a small scale. The candidate’s efforts will be to ensure that all ‘administration’ associated with trips and road shows are executed with easy and efficiency.
A traditional broking aspect is also associated with this role. In additional to taking calls and orders, the candidate will be required to service major institutional accounts, support senior equity sales people and traders. Maintaining active and providing clear communication to clients so as to ensure efficient and proactive Sales & Trading activities is also vital. The selected candidate will be expected to act as a broking assistant to the Director for at least 2 years, with the scope on moving into a direct broking role after such time, based on performance.
The individual will be required to host client events, and be able to hold conversations, when entertaining existing and prospective institutional clients. This will be required when travelling and also in-house.
This position requires some previous equity sales experience together with relevant FSA registered exams. Furthermore, the candidate must abide by all relevant requirements associated with the FSA’s Statement of Principles for Approved Persons.
Key tasks and responsibilities: • Generation of order flow from institutional client base (producing agency commissions) • Account management – including up-to-date understanding of institutional client requirements and key personnel • Liaison between investment banking and the secondary market • Placings – both primary (IPOs) and secondary issues, including coordination of book building and generation of investor interest • General attendance of company meetings in support of sector analysts and to gain first-hand knowledge of corporate stories and sector themes
Key competencies and skills: • Energy and enthusiasm • Excellent communication skills with a confident, authoritative telephone manner and the ability to articulate a clear investment message • First-rate interpersonal skills (both internally and externally in relation to corporate and institutional clients) • Strong organizational skills including ability to act effectively under pressure (including time) • Sound understanding of key valuation metrics and their relationship to share prices • Good knowledge of general market dynamics • Keen interest in information gathering from various sources including printed text, the internet and general conversation with both companies and institutional clients
